More than 200 million smartphone users worldwide now have Skype at their fingertips

Luxembourg and Espoo, Finland – Skype and Nokia today jointly announced the release of Skype for Symbian, a Skype client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian platform, the world’s most popular smartphone platform. Skype for Symbian will allow Nokia smartphone users worldwide to use Skype on the move, over either a WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G). It is now downloadable for free from the Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile content.

Skype for Symbian enables Nokia smartphone users to:
- Make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world*
- Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad
- Send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
- Share pictures, videos and other files
- Receive calls to their existing online number
- See when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
- Easily import names and numbers from the phone’s address book

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian ^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform. Skype will soon introduce this client to Symbian mobile devices from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.

“Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users,” said Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones, Nokia.

“Skype, the king of Internet communications, running on Symbian, the world’s dominant smartphone platform, makes for an explosive combination,” said Larry Berkin, Head of Global Alliances and GM USA, Symbian Foundation. “With Symbian’s global reach, Skype is that much closer to becoming the ubiquitous real-time communications platform for hundreds of millions of Symbian-based mobile users.”

Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide** will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype’s relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer.”

The initial Skype for Symbian application is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.

For more information on Skype for Symbian, including the latest supported handset list, at http://www.skype.com/go/symbian.

* Skype recommends use of an unlimited data plan to avoid incurring additional charges from operators. Users should also be aware that extra charges may apply if they use Skype over a mobile data connection when abroad.

** According to Informa Telecoms and Media

Nokia and the product names referenced in the release are trademarks of the Nokia Corporation.

Do you have a crush on someone? Does someone have a crush on you? GoodCrush eliminates potential awkwardness and shyness from romantic interactions by offering simple, fun, and exciting ways to turn your crush into a GoodCrush – a match.

Use your 5 free crushes per month to match with the guy or girl in your math class, pique the interest of your friend, make that connection with your crush at the gym or brighten your friend’s day. Connect with new people at your school or turn a missed connection into a new opportunity. We’ll also keep track of the most crushed on – so have fun crushing and getting crushed on!

Here’s how it works:

if you work at Google and have a @google.com email address, you simply enter your name and that email address, and then enter the email address of up to 5 other people that work at Google that you have a crush on. If one of those people also enters you as one of their crushes, you’ll be connected. If the person you added as a crush doesn’t add you back, your name will remain anonymous.

What are GoodCrush “Missed Connections”?

Missed connections are a way to anonymously reach out to the girl or guy you passed in the quad, exchanged glances with at the football game, or chatted with for not-long-enough at the party last night. They’ll check the page and you can turn a missed connection into a Good Connection. If you would like people to be able to respond to your post, login before posting. One real example of a missed connections post is: “Spotted: tall dark haired guy in red forbes hoodie. hottie “

Josh Weinstein started GoodCrush as a student government project as the former VP of USG at Princeton University. Now, there’s a few of us working on GoodCrush out of Manhattan.

Google Earth Outreach gives non-profits and public benefit organizations the knowledge and resources they need to visualize their cause and tell their story in Google Earth & Maps to the hundreds of millions of people who use them. You can start creating content easily in Google Earth using some placemark and balloon templates. By starting with a template design, you can stay focused on your content without having to know much at all about HTML or KML.

This video demonstrates how to copy and paste placemarks from a template to get you started creating compelling content in Google Earth.
And just like that, it’s official. Verizon Wireless has today announced that Motorola’s scrumptiously named Devour will be heading to its network next month, with it being the first VZW phone to feature Motoblur. Not that we’re seeing any surprises here, but a quick specification run down draws our attention to a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, a touch-sensitive navigation pad, a pre-installed 8GB microSD card and Bluetooth support. Unfortunately, there’s no apparent mention of multitouch — and we wouldn’t expect it out of the box, since the Devour runs Android 1.6 — but we’re crossing our fingers (and toes, for that matter) for Google to sling that delightful Nexus One update to the rest of its high-powered Android phones in the very near future. There’s nary a mention of an asking price, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye out as launch day approaches.

Finally Apple Inc. introduced the highly anticipated iPad tablet computer.

In general, I think, it was about what people had come to expect after months of speculation. As always, I expect Apple to add more bells and whistles to the thing — and drop prices — in six to 12 months. I might be a relatively early adopter, but I’m not bleeding edge, preferring to mull over a tech purchase and consider closely my own use patterns and needs.

That said, I sketched out some preliminary pros and cons of the iPad, as I perceive them. What am I missing? Here are Apple’s official tech specs for the iPad.

Pros
Price, application support, slick, iWork, iBooks and large screen are main reason for buying a ipad.

Cons
No camera, no flash support, no background application support, typing ergonomic , no phone option and above all no usb or hdmi cables.

Either you can keep a map book (this is really stupid idea, indeed) or you can use online map. But using online map creates problem sometimes. Either you can drive or you can check direction from map. Both can ‘t be done simultaneously. But thanks to Nokia OVI, which has introduced an amazing functionality for mapping with audio. Check the given video and make your journey tension free.

Zune HD Vs iPod Touch

If the MP3 player market was a fault line, we’d have a boatload of busy seismographs on our hands. Certainly, two of the most exciting releases of the past couple weeks are the new iPod Touch and the Zune HD. Now, if you’re curious how the two devices compare with one another, you could always read the deluge of articles available on CNET and around the Web, but we can certainly see how that might be a bit overwhelming. Soon enough, we’ll pit the two players head-to-head in a knock-down, drag-out brawl (aka Prizefight). In the meantime, we’ve created a purely technical spec-to-spec comparison chart to tide you over.

If you are pure music lover than you should go with Zune HD i personally feel as its better over iPod Touch. Do keep in mind that you want get application supports which you are getting in iPod, if you keep this reason on side then surly Zune HD is winner.

It may be stylish, small and fun, but the bloggie™ PM5K with its exclusive 360 Video shooting is truly in a class of its own. Capture an amazing panorama or get the whole action with you and your friends together. Life’s more fun when you see it from a completely different angle.

How does it work?

A typical video camera lens captures whatever is going on straight ahead of it, and the resulting video has left and right boundaries. But with 360 Video recording, right and left are no longer boundaries: they’re directions to be explored.

bloggie™ PM5K comes supplied with a special 360 Video lens so you can capture the action going on all around. Just slip on the adaptor and start shooting 360 degree panoramas.

Your footage will be converted into a long strip of video showing all 360 degree angles with the supplied PMB software. You can play around with it interactively using the 360 Video Player which is part of the PMB software. You can also upload your amazing panoramic video to online sharing websites such as YouTube.

A Siemens research project has recently broken the record for wirelessly transmitting data, by making use of white LEDs (light-emitting diodes) instead of radio waves. Siemens researchers here able to transmit data at 500Mbps, beating the previous record of 200Mbps, and completely obliterating current WiFi standards (though upcoming WiFi standards could push it into Gigabit territory).

Siemens researchers used Ostar LEDs, one of the brightest LEDs on the market. The lights are modulated at a frequency that allows for high-speed data transfers. On the other end is a photodetector that receives the light signals and converts them into electrical pulses.

Siemens refers to this method of transmitting data as VLC (Visible Light Communication), and the company claims that it could be put to use in numerous ways. It could be used to help boost the performance of wireless networks. For example, if you live in an apartment building where WiFi networks interfere with each other, VLC could be an alternative since visible light isn’t currently used to carry data, so there would be significantly less interference.

Another advantage is that VLC data transfer is more secure than radio signals, since the receiving end must have a photodetector and a simple curtain is enough to stop potential eavesdroppers.

Other applications suggested are in transportation, where LED stoplights can transmit information to trains and cars, for example. Siemens mentions that they combined five LEDs to transfer data over “longer distances” at rates up to 100Mbit/s, but didn’t mention exactly how long these distances were.

Also, there was no mention as to how other light sources might affect the data transfer, or how much distance negatively affected the data speed. (Courtesy : pcworld.com)
