More than 200 million smartphone users worldwide now have Skype at their fingertips

Luxembourg and Espoo, Finland – Skype and Nokia today jointly announced the release of Skype for Symbian, a Skype client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian platform, the world’s most popular smartphone platform. Skype for Symbian will allow Nokia smartphone users worldwide to use Skype on the move, over either a WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G). It is now downloadable for free from the Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile content.

Skype for Symbian enables Nokia smartphone users to:
- Make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world*
- Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad
- Send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
- Share pictures, videos and other files
- Receive calls to their existing online number
- See when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
- Easily import names and numbers from the phone’s address book

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian ^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform. Skype will soon introduce this client to Symbian mobile devices from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.

“Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users,” said Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones, Nokia.

“Skype, the king of Internet communications, running on Symbian, the world’s dominant smartphone platform, makes for an explosive combination,” said Larry Berkin, Head of Global Alliances and GM USA, Symbian Foundation. “With Symbian’s global reach, Skype is that much closer to becoming the ubiquitous real-time communications platform for hundreds of millions of Symbian-based mobile users.”

Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide** will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype’s relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer.”

The initial Skype for Symbian application is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.

For more information on Skype for Symbian, including the latest supported handset list, at http://www.skype.com/go/symbian.

* Skype recommends use of an unlimited data plan to avoid incurring additional charges from operators. Users should also be aware that extra charges may apply if they use Skype over a mobile data connection when abroad.

** According to Informa Telecoms and Media

Nokia and the product names referenced in the release are trademarks of the Nokia Corporation.

BEIJING, China – The second of our series of four videos from Beijing takes a look inside the Nokia design studio and follows the device through to the factory floor. The overriding theme is one of quality, with various measures in place along the way to ensure every device that leaves the factory lives up to Nokia’s exacting standards.

Sean Su is the lead designer at Nokia’s Beijing design studio and he talks about the single standard he works to, and that’s one of quality. And, in what must be a first (I hadn’t seen one in action until now) is a video of Nokia’s 3D printer, which is used to create a 3D model of a device, straight from the designer’s drawings. It’s a pretty amazing process, and one definitely worth watching. I’ve held a 3D model in my hand before, and it’s uncanny how it resembles a real product. It might not be able to make calls, but it still gives a good feeling of what the final device will be like in the hand.

Down on the factory floor, our presenter talks to Lee Chin Beng, quality manager. He highlights some of the techniques and tools used in the production process to measure and check the quality of the final output. The result? Whatever device you buy, its myriad capabilities will have been tested and checked before it leaves the factory floor. Now, over to the video so you can see for yourselves. Enjoy.

It filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission alleging that Apple’s iPods and computers also violate Nokia’s intellectual property rights. The company had sued Apple in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Del., over the iPhone, claiming it infringes 10 of its patents. Apple denied the allegations and this month countered with its own lawsuit saying Nokia had copied aspects of the iPhone in its devices.
Guilty plea in hacking case

A computer hacker who helped orchestrate one of the largest credit card thefts in U.S. history pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud in the last of three cases brought by federal prosecutors. Prosecutors said Albert Gonzalez of Miami invaded the computer systems of several major retailers and stole tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers. Gonzalez pleaded guilty in Boston in a case involving unauthorized access to computers of Maine-based Hannaford supermarkets and other retailers. He pleaded guilty in September to charges from two other similar cases. (Courtesy : latimes.com)

Apple Inc. (AAPL), maker of the iPod and iTunes music software, said it filed a countersuit claiming that Nokia Oyj (NOK) is infringing its technology. In the suit filed today in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, Apple claimed Nokia is wrongfully using 13 of its patents. The claim seeks an order barring Nokia from infringing and for unspecified damages.”Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours,” Bruce Sewell, Cupertino, California-based Apple’s general counsel, said in a statement.

Nokia, the world’s largest phone maker, sued Apple in October claiming infringement of 10 patents and seeking back royalties on the 33.7 million iPhones sold since the device’s introduction in 2007. Espoo, Finland-based Nokia had said that all Apple iPhone models use Nokia’s technology for wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption.Nokia spokesman Mark Durrant said the counterclaim doesn’t change the “fundamentals” of the original patent infringement suit.“We will need time to study it before we make any direct comment,” Durrant said in a telephone interview. “But it changes nothing in the fundamentals of the original filing made by Nokia in Delaware.”
Denies Infringement

The Nokia E71, Carbide.c++, Nokia 5310, Nokia N900 all infringe Apple’s patents, Apple claims in today’s filing. Apple also denies infringing the 10 patents Nokia had alleged and added that Nokia’s patents are invalid and shouldn’t be enforced.

Nokia is seeking royalties for the patents that have been infringed with the Apple iPhone, Apple iPhone 3G and Apple iPhone 3GS.

Apple’s actions have allowed it to charge less for its products, because it hasn’t had to recover development costs, Nokia said in its complaint. Nokia said it spent about €40 billion ($60.1 billion) during the past two decades in research and development. (Courtesy : businessweek.com)

Nokia N97 Mini looks like a tiny twin of the Nokia N97. No doubt Mini version is not too much tiny, still it is much handy than actual version of Nokia N97. The N97 mini packs 8GB of storage, a 3.2-inch touchscreen and full QWERTY keyboard into its 14.2mm thin frame. It’s also the first Nokia device to sport Lifecasting with Ovi – a new partnership with the world’s largest social network, Facebook. The N97 mini is based on the same tilt display design of its N97 big brother, built into a smaller body complete with new design touches. The mini runs new software that adds improvements to the user interface, more home-screen widgets and flick scrolling, and incorporates more social networking tools like facebook, twitter, orkut etc.

Lifecasting enables users to update their Facebook status directly from the device’s homescreen. It doesn’t stop there though as location details can also be updated, enabling a whole new level of social sharing and communication. With the ability to completely customise the homescreen, users will be able to make their N97 mini truly unique.

The 3.2-inch touchscreen opens up a new world of software improvements including flick scrolling and a range of new experiences including new homescreen widgets. What’s more, the software update will also be available next month for existing N97 devices.
